Off The Grid (OTG) is a new AAA Battle Royale 2.0 third-person shooter set in a dystopian cyberpunk future.
A BR like no other, OTG aims to evolve the genre through strong emphasis on narrative progression, giving players the freedom to control the story and impact the gameplay with each decision they make. Core to the experience and narrative is its unique way in which gamers can craft, customize, and trade their in-game items with each other. In OTG, players fight to survive the covert corporate battles in the future.
- Work on 3C/Core Character design, including basic locomotion and controls:
- Base Locomotion (walk and run speed)
- Locomotion Abilities (vault, slide, etc.)
- Strafing
- Be the main designer on the third-person gunplay system, creating gun gameplay:
- Weapon Recoil & Spread Behavior
- Attachment System (changing base gun stats by adding attachments)
- Weapon Modularity/Customization
- Weapon Skin System (cosmetic)
- Weapon Recoil & Spread Behavior
- Design the games’ content frameworks/pipelines for weapons, compatible with OTG’s live service approach
- Propose basic UX design wireframes (HUD, weapon customization screen, misc. game menus) before a proper UX department was established during pre-production
This is a good overview over many of the weapons that I worked on for Off The Grid – one video to show beauty shots of the guns, and one video to show a bit of the gun-play, for which I worked on the core system (how recoil, spread, etc. are supposed to work), as well as the main tuning of the weaponry in order to create unique weapon “characters” to make each weapon feel unique and distinguishable from the others.
I was also responsible for the conception and initial implementation of the weapon customization system (internally referred to as the “gunsmith”). My work included designing the different types of attachments (scopes, barrels, magazines, etc.), including how they impacted weapon stats positively and negatively, as well as work with the Senior Weapon Artist to set in stone a modular visual attachment and skin system to allow for maximal customization.
